Buttermere lake is set in a magificent position surrounded on all side by the fells. There is a great low level walk starting and finishing in Buttermere itself which follows the lake shore all the way round. It is also a great place to start ascents of Haystacks and Red Pike.

The lake is 1¼ miles long and ¼ mile wide, and is 75 feet deep.

Its name means "the lake by the dairy pastures".
