One of the grandest survivors of the Palladian era, Houghton was built in the 1720s by Britain's first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole. A magnificent showcase of craftsman and painters of an elegant age, Houghton retains most of its original furnishings. The widely acclaimed 5 acre walled garden is divided into "Garden rooms" including a spectacular double sided herbaceous border, formal rose garden with over 150 varieties of English Rose. The Hall sits at the centre of a vibrant 4500 acre estate, including the 450 acre Deer Park, home to a spectacular herd of white fallow deer and smaller groups of exotic deer. In the stables there is a restaurant and gift shop as well as a model soldier museum, with one of the largest and most comprehensive collections in the world, with over 20,000 models displayed in various battle formations.
