The displays provide detailed information, artifacts and ephemera on all aspects of mining in Cumbria and the North. In our Geology and Mineral Room learn about how the Lake District was formed, how our mineral veins occurred, the forming of Fossils and what life was like when Dinosaurs walked the Earth. You will be amazed by the Glowing Rocks in our Crystal Cave where Fluorescence in Minerals is displayed.
You can also try your hand at gold panning. You will find great little pieces of sparkling silver, coloured crystals, garnets and Fool's Gold - and you can take these away with you. The gold is somehwat hardert to find - but worth a look!
The Museum shop has a wide range of gifts, including rocks, minerals and fossils. The shop also is one of the approved suppliers of geological equipment, including hammers, goggles, lenses, maps and books on local and UK Geology.
Also a new and secondhand bookshop.
