In 1891, Leon Bonnat decided to give to his birthplace all the works of art which he had acquired. With later donations this museum claims to be one of richest in France. There are 500 works of art (paintings, sculpture, drawings, objets d'art).
It covers five centuries of European Art. Only one tenth of its collections are permanently on display on its three floors at any time. Temporary exhibitions display its other works.
Some of the artists whose work the museum holds are:
Da Vici, Raphael, Michael-Angelo
Van Dyck, Rubens
Rembrandt
Greco, Goya
Lawrence, Reynolds
David, Degas
Compare this with the very contemporary exhibits in the Guggenheim in nearby Bilbao, Spain.
