Named after its founders John and Josephine Bowes, thsi spectacular museum opened in 1892. The couple's intriguing story and the wonderful collection of fine and decorative arts are brought to life in a magical museum experience.
Visit the family friendly Streatlam galleries, which provide an introduction to the permanent collections of textiles, furniture, ceramics and paintings. The outstanding ceramic collections include pieces from the great continental factories of Sevres and Meissen, as well as the Lady Ludlow Collection of English Porcelain.
Fansatic paintings including masterpieces by Canaletto, Goya and Gainsborough can be found in the picture galleries.
The most popular object is the famous "Silver Swan", a working musical automaton made in 1773.
