York Minster is one of the largest cathedrals of its kind in Northern Europe. Dominating the York skyline, the Minster - the seat of the Archbishop of York - is a deeply historical centre of modern Christian belief, steeped in traces of every age of York's two thousand-year history, from its foundation by the Romans in 71 AD, its Viking occupation in the 800s, to the present and future of this magnificent walled city.
The Minster welcomes visitors of all ages and beliefs to discover the history of York. The building itself is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and stained glass, offering stunning rooftop views from the top of the 275 steps in the central Tower, an atmospheric glimpse at the remains of ancient sites beneath the Minster in the Undercroft and Crypt, and the extraordinarily beautiful octagonal Chapter House. Free guided tours are offered throughout by volunteer guides on Monday - Saturday between 9:00am and 3:00pm.
The Minster Shop offers a large and varied selection of York-related gifts such as books, CDs and jewellery, and the Minster Café, a licensed restaurant serves a range of home-made hot and cold fresh food and drinks, prepared daily. Outside seating is available in summer, allowing visitors to enjoy their refreshments in beautiful surroundings at the foot of the towering Minster above.
