Hardcastle Crags is set in a woodland Pennine valley, and is a rich habitat for flora and fauna, including the Northern hairy wood ant. Guided-walks and orienteering courses are available and the recently conserved Gibson Mill offers education and conference facilities, tours and refreshments.
