Lourdes is the birthplace of St Bernadette (Soubirous) born 7th. January 1844.
It is here that St Bernadette received her visions of the Virgin Mary in the cold, damp and hidden place that became the Grotto.
The Grotto can now be accessed by the millions of believers who make a pilgrimage come to their holy place - some to pray, some to seek miraculous cures for themselves or for others.
Helpers also come to assist at the Grotto, to give praise to their God by service.
The candlelit processions are very moving and there are events throughout the year.
The atmosphere of the place is still not destroyed by the commercialism which has grown up around Lourdes. It is worth a visit by Catholic and non-Catholics for the architecture alone.
