Lovely old town with real character. 13th century walls encircle a higgledy-piggledy collection of lovely buildings that date from the 15th to 18th centuries. It has a history of rebellion, from 14th century refusal to accept French rule and minting its own coinage to being the birthplace of one of the leaders of the French Resistance in Brittany in the 20th century - vist the museum 'Maison de la Chouannerie et de la Revolution' to appreciate Moncontour's turbulent past. There is also a cosume museum which has to provide the inspiration for inhabitants dress at the fetes des ramparts. There are a couple of good restaurants, bars and creperies, plus several interesting individual shops in and around the central square.
