Although only moderate in height compared to it's neighbours such as Helvellyn, as A Wainwright says (Book Two of the Pictorial Guide to the Lakes) "the fell more than holds its own even in such a goodly company; it has a distinctive blend of outline and rugged solidity characteristic of a true mountain".
From Patterdale head over Goldrill Beck and up the fell towards Boredale Hause. You will see two parallel paths heading up, both take you to the same place! On your way up don't forget to look behind you for some great views down the valley over Ullswater and across to Grisdale Valley and Helvellyn. Also look south towards Brotherswater and Kirkstone Pass. At Boredale Hause head for the Northern path (there are lots of paths ina ll directions so choose wisely) and just follow this all the way up to the summit. With the exception of one narrow gulley the path is fairly easy going all the way up. from the top on a clear day there are good views to the east across to high street. From the top either come back down the way you cam up or head north down to Howtown and the lake shore, and then follow the path along the alke shore back to Patterdale - not quite as leisurely as it sounds but offering great views of Ullswater.
