Gord Guest House B&B Fetlar Shetland Islands Family friendly B&B for romantic breaks near a beach in Fetlar, Shetland Islands, Scotland

Welcoming family run guest house on Fetlar. Appreciate the beauty of this wonderful island and its wildlife while at the same time enjoying comfortable accommodation and tasty homecooked meals.

We have three letting rooms – one with a double bed and the other two with two twin beds.  All rooms have an ensuite bathroom (with shower rather than bath), tea/coffee making facilities and a colour TV.  There is free wi-fi available and a small residents’ lounge with a selection of books on Shetland which you can borrow.

Most visitors choose to have an evening meal as well as bed and breakfast as there is no other restaurant on the island.  Meal times are flexible but breakfast is typically at 8am and dinner at 7pm. We can provide a packed lunch for an additional charge of £6 per person if requested well in advance.

Fetlar is the fourth largest of the Shetland Islands.  It currently has 64 residents, a primary school with three children attending, one shop and one café (with free wi-fi) as well as the Guest House/B& B.  The shop has an off licence as well as selling all basic groceries including milk, bread, fresh fruit and veg and snacks.  The café is open when the shop is open.  Provisional shop opening hours from April 2018 for the summer season are 10am to 4.30pm seven days a week.

There are many wonderful walks on the island – all well signposted.  There is amazing wildlife.  You will certainly see seals and may come across an otter.  As well as the red necked phalarope, there are a large number of different birds.  You will need a good pair of binoculars.

For those interested in geology, Fetlar has a unique range of rocks including the Funzie (pronounced Finnie) conglomerate.  There are also unexplored archaeological sites including brochs.  You will find some excellent factsheets about all aspects of the island on the Fetlar website at ww.fetlar.org under the Media tab.

The Fetlar Interpretative Centre is well worth a visit.  Opening hours are from 11am to 4pm in the summer season.   The Centre has some fascinating displays showing the history of the island.

There is a highly qualified resident nurse on the island but, at present, there is no cover for the nurse when she is not on duty.  The nearest health centre is on Yell, the next island.  It is sensible, therefore, to ensure that you bring sufficient medication (if needed) with you for your stay on the island.

As the island is only approximately 6 miles wide, you will not be doing much driving but please ensure that you have plenty of fuel in your vehicle as there as no fuel available on the island.    Fuel is available on Unst and Yell – a ferry ride away.

Mobile phone coverage is good if you use Vodafone – and we are told that EE coverage will also shortly be good.  For other providers, you will find it hard to get a signal.

If you need further information (for example, how easy it is to get to Fetlar) then please contact us.
