Ivy Cottage Archiestown Morayshire Gay Friendly Family friendly Pet/Dog Friendly Holiday Cottage in Morayshire, Moray Region, Scotland

But'nben holiday cottage in Archiestown on the WhiskyTrail tourist route, SpeysideWay, CastleTrail and Ben Rinnes is nearby. Mid way Grantown on Spey and Elgin.

Archiestown is a small grid plan village with a population of 160 It was founded in 1760. At 747 feet above sea level to the north of majestic River Spey the summit of Ben Rinnes 2775 is clearly visible. "

Ivy Cottage" is in Souters Lane which is a link between High Street and North Lane.

Ben Rinnes a distinctive Corbett ( a peak between 2,500 ft and 3,000) visible from the village and many areas of Moray and district being the highest point between the Cairngorms and Moray Firth.A fairly strenuous walk on the Ben path offers views over Whisky distilleries providing the alternative name - "Whisky Hill" At 2,755 feet above sea level the view on a clear day extends to Moray Firth in the north and beyond mountains of Sutherland, the high ground of Caithness.North west the mountains in Inverness-shire and Easter Ross are visible. To the south west the high plateau of Cairngoms fiil the horizon. Come prepared with walking boots, warm clothes and waterproofs even in summer!

A relaxing nostalgic trip is offered by two heritage railways in the area. The Strathspey Steam Railway operate between the small station Broomhill, west of Grantown on Spey (known as Glenboggle in bbc tv series "Monarch of the Glen") Trains call at Boat of Garten (summer home to Ospreys at nearby Loch Garten) and terminate in Aviemore.

The Keith and Dufftown Railway operate 1960's dieselw units in a country branch line atmosphere trough a quiet enchanting landscape with Malt Whisky connections. Dufftown is the Malt Whisky Capital of the World! The concentration of distilleries - 7 Stills here - has lead to a famous rhyme"Rome was built on seven hills but Dufftown has seven stills". The Speyside Cooperage between Dufftown and Craigellachie / Aberlour has pyramids of casks which can be seen under repair from a gallery open to the public. A film "Acorn to Cask" tells the story.

Pleasant village walks around Archiestown include a 2 mile downhill trip to Aberlour. The River Spey is crossed on the elegant Victoria suspension bridge. Aberlour is a cental point on the Speyside Way Long Distance Footpath which extends from Buckie on Moray Firth coast via Spey Bay (Wildlife and Dolphin Conversation Centre) to Aviemore.Distilleries around Aberlour include Glenfarclas,Macallan,Cardhu. Tours of distilleries can give an enlightening introduction to the history of the area with illicit distillers, the excise men and local characters. Fishing Licences are available for the River Spey. In the neighbourhood 20 golf courses are available.

Aberlour is home of Walkers Shortbread and other tast delights from this world famous bakery - enjoy the Factory Shop. At Fochabers on A96 and beside the River Spey 4 miles from Spey Bay is Baxters- the family business producing intenationally recognised quality foods. A replica of the original shop is a museum.

Craigellachie Bridge, constucted in 1814 was in use until 1972 as A95 Trunk Road! A graceful cast iron single arch is believed to be the most impressive of the period. The metal work was constructed in Ruabon, North Wales and transported to Moray by sea.The River Spey is fast flowing at this point. The bridge constructed here at a cost of£8.200 transformed communications greatly. The B9102 to Archiestown 4 miles from here is on the cliff ridge above the bridge.

Ballindalloch Castle origins from 1542 is west of Aberlour. Seasonally open to the public,it is a family home.In contrastr Auchindoun Castle was burnt out in 1592. Accessed from a farm track off Dufftown to Rhynie Road (A941) it is in care of Historic Scotland and worthy of the trek to visit. Nationat Trust for Scotland Craigievar Castle dates from 1626 is a gem with exterior splendour resembling  the appearance as th builders would have left it. In a woodland and farming environment off A890 near Alford i is to have inspired Walt Disney n Castle design!  Alford is the home of Grampian Transport Museum providing an additional attraction fora longer day out on south side of Lecht ski slopes into Donside.

The Moray Firth coast has much to commend it. Sheltered by the Grampian Mountains the rainfall is generally a great deal less than the west coast. Kinnaird Head Lighthouse is the extreme east with the 1787 lighthouse including the top light a museum. Traveling west Pennan,"Local Hero" a 1980's comedey filmed in part here,Troup Head rspb reserve, and communites of Crovie,Gardenstown, Portsoy,Cull and Portknockie including BowFiddle Rock are great places to visit.
