Downcraig Ferry Isle of Cumbrae Large group Family friendly Pet/Dog Friendly Holiday Cottage in Millport, North Ayrshire, Scotland

Downcraig Ferry is a traditionally built family home on the lovely island of Great Cumbrae on the Firth of Clyde 3 miles from the town of Millport. The house has safe garden spaces for games or enjoying the sun and is a stone's throw from the sea.

Downcraig Ferry is located on the east coast of Great Cumbrae overlooking Largs and Fairlie and is about three miles from the picturesque town of Millport. Downcraig sleeps up to 12 people and is fully equipped including bedding and towels. Group bookings of friends or extended family are particularly welcome. We do not charge extra for electricity. Pets are welcome, but should be kept off beds and furniture and cleaned up after. The house is in an ideal position for a family holiday for those who want to get away from it all, but not too far away!

A short ferry trip from Largs (10 mins) the house is only a few hundred yards along the road from the landing slip. Downcraig sits on a small promontory which, more than 100 years ago, boasted an iron pier at which the steamers would berth and it is said that newly-wed islanders would take a wee dram at the Ferry Inn, before they left for their honeymoon. Behind the house is a craggy outcrop which is called Dun Creag (Rock of the Fort) after which the house is named and on which there is some evidence of vitrification. The house has for long been a family home and has a simple, charming atmosphere. The garden and the crag behind the house offer exciting play areas and the walled pier garden in front can be used for all sorts of games such as kick the can, pier tennis and badminton or just for lazing in the sun. There is also a small beach across the road on the south side of the house.

Towards the end of the walled pier area is a small mound, called Haco’s Mound. Legend has it that King Haco or Haakon, the leader of the Vikings, sat on this mound watching in despair, as his fleet was blown onto the shore at Largs. There his forces were massacred by the forces of King Alexander. The local people, including, it is said, women and children, joined in and fell upon the Vikings as they struggled in the stormy surf of the beach.

The accommodation consists of two double bedrooms, one of which has an en-suite bathroom and is on the ground floor, so is suitable for the elderly or those with some mobility issues. In addition to the double room upstairs, there is a small single room and a room with three single beds. Downstairs there is also a bunk room with two bunks sleeping four people. This room has a handbasin included in it.

The dining room has a large table capable of seating 10 at a squeeze, but with room for a small extra table for larger groups and also has a multi fuel stove for those colder days. The sitting room has two sofas and a TV/DVD player which has Freeview programmes and a large library of books. In the bunk room there are boardgames and other amusements for those rainy days.

The main bathroom has a shower and a bath as well as the usual facilities and the back bedroom en suite bathroom has a bath, basin and lavatory. The kitchen is fully equipped with cutlery, crockery and pots and pans, a fridge freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer as well as some additional equipment such as microwave, slow cooker, toaster etc.

There is plenty to do on the island. If you like watersports try the sportscotland National Centre or if you like Golf we have a wonderful and challenging 18 hole course with stunning views over the islands of Wee Cumbrae, Arran and Bute and Kintyre.

The best mode of transport on the island is the bicycle and these, in all shapes and sizes, are available for hire from Millport. Most of the road around the island (10 miles) is largely free of traffic, the only part with regular traffic being the 3 miles between the town and the ferry slip.

In the town there is crazy golf, a huge bouncy castle and other fun fair rides and the Newton and Kames beaches in Millport are sandy and safe.

The Island's Field Studies Centre has an interesting Museum and Aquarium and Garrison House, the focal point of the town, has a number of facilities available within it, including free wifi in the cafe. At various intervals during the year films are shown at the Quayhead, when the famous Screen Machine comes over.

In addition, there are plenty of walks and sandy beaches around the island with good secluded spots for a picnic or boat trips for fishing or to see seals, porpoises and even the possibility of sighting a basking shark.

Terms are 50% payment secures the booking, with the balance to be paid at least one week before entry. A separate security deposit of £75 should also be lodged by entry and this will be refunded depending on the house being left in good condition, with no breakages or damage etc.

Please note that Holiday Millport operates a strict no smoking policy within the property. Some or all of the security deposit may be forfeit should smoking take place inside the house.
