Welcome to our Idyllic Holiday Cottage in the Lake District
Welcome to Dovedale Holiday Cottage in the Lake District. Our cottage is located on a working Lake District Hill Farm, Hartsop Hall, near Patterdale and Ullswater in Cumbria. It offers self-catering accommodation for 6 people in a wonderful rural location, in the heart of the Lakeland fells, with Helvellyn, St Sunday Crag and Fairfield on the doorstep.
The Holiday Cottage
Dovedale Cottage is a wing of the 16th century Hartsop Hall, tucked under the fellside of Hartsop Above How, and with magnificent views across the meadows to Caudale Moor, rising above. The property enjoys seclusion from passing road traffic, being reached at the end of a quarter-mile farm drive. It is at the heart of the farm, so the sheep and cattle are often close by. It provides high quality self catering holiday accommodation for 6 people and has facilities and access for disabled and less able visitors.
The self catering accommodation includes a big farmhouse kitchen which has recently been refurbished. The comfortable lounge next door enjoys views in both directions and has an open fire. Also on the ground floor is a newly-converted single bedroom with spacious en-suite shower room, containing basin and WC. These facilities have been specially created to accommodate disabled guests using wheelchairs with reasonable dexterity and those who cannot manage the stairs.
On the first floor are three big bedrooms, all with king-size beds (one of which can be converted to twin beds, on request). There is a family bathroom, and all the rooms have wonderful views.
The furnishings are traditional, mostly antique pine, as appropriate to the character and style of the cottage. Dovedale benefits from newly-installed oil-fired central heating, and fuel for the open fire is provided. Outside the cottage, accessed from the kitchen, is a charming garden with plenty of sitting-out room and space for barbecues. There is ample parking in the farmyard outside the front door, or to the side of the property.
The beds are made up with duvets and all bed-linen for your stay is provided. Please note that Towels are NOT provided, so don’t forget to bring them! A cot and high chair can be made available; please request at the time of booking (please bring your own bedding for the cot).
All the fuel, oil heating, electricity, coal for the open fires is provided for guests and is included in the cost of your holiday rental. Please note our Lake District cottage is strictly 'NO SMOKING'.
Dog Friendly in the Lake District
Dogs may be allowed, subject to certain restrictions. They are restricted to a maximum number of 2 at the discretion of the farmer, subject to certain conditions and to the satisfactory completion by their owner of a declaration form. Owners wishing to bring a dog must speak personally to the Booking Agents, who will advise and issue the necessary form, to be returned with the Cottage Booking Form and relevant fee. Please note dogs must not be left unattended in the property AT ANY TIME, nor allowed to sit or sleep on the furniture. We regret we are unable to accommodate cats at the cottage.
Holiday Cottage Location – a rural idyll in the heart of the Lake District
Hartsop Hall is a National Trust owned 16th Century Grade I listed building. The working hill farm of some 3000 acres offers guests a unique opportunity to see a way of life which is fast disappearing. There are many well-marked footpaths criss-crossing the land, leading up to the fells in all directions, and for more level terrain, an old bridlepath past Hartsop Hall to Brotherswater.
As it is a working farm guests are kindly reminded to keep their children and dogs under control, especially during lambing season (April to late May).
There is a campsite shop for basics just a short walk across the fields, and Patterdale and Glenridding offer a range of shops including a post office, off-licence and general stores some 2.5 miles away.
The nearest pub is the Brotherswater Inn, ½ mile away; the best restaurant-pub nearby is the Queen’s Head at Troutbeck, on the Windermere side of the Kirkstone Pass.
The cottage is located in the midst of some of the most popular fells in the Lake District, and close to the lakes of to Brotherswater and Ullswater. There are plenty of fantastic walks from straight from the door of your holiday cottage including Dove Crag (with its famous Priests Hole), Caiston Glen, Fairfield, St Sunday Crag, Helvellyn itself and High Street. There are also some more gentle walks including one which follows the ancient bridlepath down past Brothers Water and on through Patterdale to Ullswater. Please see the map below for a range of other things to do and places to see in the area.
