The original house was built in 1910 by the Carne family of brewers and bottlers, operating at the turn of the century. One very famous member of the family was Colonel Carne, VC of the Glorious Gloucesters.
Its original name was Garras a Cornish name meaning house on the hill, and because of its origin was affectionately referred to by local inhabitants as screwtop mansion. This name evolved from personal associations in the early 1900's, when beer was bottled with a rubber banded screw stopper. Present day, The Green Lawns Hotel has a complement of 39 luxury bedrooms and a reputable first class restaurant and banqueting facilities.
