Villa Description
Situations on this coastline do not come any finer. From its commanding position, this grand country residence can justifiably lay claim to the most impressive, sweeping panoramic views encompassing a 180º swathe of country and coastline that stretches from the outskirts of Faro in the east all the way to the Monchique mountains in the distant west. The natural backdrop to this amazing vista is the Atlantic Ocean, filling the horizon and seamlessly merging the border between sea and sky into a breathtaking azure collage to which the accompanying photographs cannot possibly do justice. To relax in the infinity swimming pool or recline on the spacious terraces and survey this vast, ever-changing panorama is pure pleasure.
As if those spectacular views were not enough, Quinta dos Tomilhos ( Estate of Thyme) simply exudes style and elegance and, quite simply, has to be one of the most comfortable, homely and welcoming properties available. Inspiration for the design of Tomilhos was drawn from the grand manor houses of the Portuguese aristocracy, hence the grounds are entered via a cobblestone driveway that sweeps up through well-tended, landscaped gardens into an expansive walled courtyard. Wide double doors under the porch lead into a cool, tiled hallway with raised open hearth to one end - the first example of a decorative style that impeccably blends rustic comfort with modern practical amenities.
Throughout the property thoughtful architectural features, including wide doorways, ample stone arches and well placed windows, not only allow light to flood in and further enhance what is an already spacious interior but also help to keep the house agreeably cool in the height of summer. Tastefully displayed ornaments and antiques add even more character while a striking collection of colourful artwork adorns the walls.
The splendid kitchen boasts a five ring gas hob, large eye-level oven, microwave, dishwasher, long marble worktops and a huge American-style fridge freezer with integrated drinks cooler, ice maker and filtered drinking water system. To one end, an impressive twelve-seat table, specially commissioned from 200 year old Scots Pine, effectively creates a second dining room.
The vast living room is equally well equipped with various plush sofas and armchairs, a flat screen TV with satellite and DVD, a CD player and an I Pod player. Access onto a long South facing covered terrace that leads around to the pool area and provides the perfect spot for relaxing during the day and dining in the evening.
Conveniently split over two levels, the sleeping accommodation sees each of the five bedrooms benefitting from independently controlled air conditioning and its own, well appointed en suite bath or shower room. This would be a great choice of house for larger familes or groups of friends looking to share a holiday together whilst each retaining their own space.
Outside, surrounded by acres of aromatic wild thyme after which the house is named, an air of quiet tranquility pervades the colourfully landscaped grounds. Neatly arranged banks of flowering shrubs, manicured lawns and bougainvillaea decorate the secluded gardens and a divine, south facing, infinity swimming pool, appears to reach out into the Atlantic itself.
