First built in 1703, The Cross Keys in the Stirlingshire village of Kippen now has the addition of 3 boutique ensuite shower rooms - 1 x king size room and 2 twin rooms. All are decorated in the same style and have excellent mattresses, crisp white linen and plasma screens with in built DVD and radio. Wi-fi is available, as are a small selection of films.
The menu changes on a regular basis but current selections include potted ham hough, oatcakes and plum chutney and smoked fish pate with dill and lemon sauce for starters which are priced from £4. Mains starting from £6 include smoke fish and leek pie with roasted fennel, lamb stovies and mixed mushroom and garlic pie with broccoli and roast potatoes.
Every Sunday is roast day featuring two types of roast with all the trimmings.
One clever touch to the menu is the children's section which includes bangers, mash and onion gravy, homemade fish or chicken goujons and pasta with home made tomato sauce. There's a dual pricing - one price for the kids and another if the adults are tempted by the choices and want a bigger plate. Most of the produce is Scottish with the local butcher (T & R Skinner) providing supplies.
Breakfast is available from 7.30-ish through to 9.30-ish.
