Dumfriesshire is an unspoiled corner of Scotland, mountainous in the north and with fertile plains in the south and down to the coast of the Solway Firth. A break in one of our self catering cottages is the perfect way to get away from it all.
The imposing ruins of Caerlaverock castle, are encircled by a wide moat and surrounded by the extensive marshlands of the Caerlaverock Wetland Centre - a firm favourite with birdwatchers. Threave Castle is also well worth a visit. This massive tower is set on an island in the river Dee and you need to take a boat to get there. Built centuries later, the baroque masterpiece that is Drumlanrig Castle only 10 miles from the cottage has a fantastic collection of artworks and precious items. The extensive parkland here is very popular with cyclists.
Robert Burns spent his last years in the county town of Dumfries (there is a story that he also lived for a while in what is now Blackaddie House Hotel adjacent to the self catering cottages) and the Robert Burns Centre here tells his story. Other towns of interest are Moffat, an attractive Victorian spa, and Langholm , birthplace of the poet Hugh McDiarmuid. And don't miss Gretna Green, still popular with eloping couples after all these years while the hotel adjacent to the cottage was built for the Admiral Crichton way back in 1540.
