Fountain Cross Cottage, Cosy Retreat in Picturesque Portmahomack
Fountain Cross Cottage is a cosy little cottage in the Easter Ross-shire village of Portmahomack, 39 miles from Inverness. It has one bedroom, living room, kitchen/dining room and bathroom, and is ideal for a couple (although in addition to the bedroom there is also a bed settee in the living room, so it can also be suitable for young children - or even 4 adults at a push!). It is just across the street from the beach and harbour, and close to the village hotel and pub, the village shop, restaurant and cafe. Portmahomack is ideal for those who want a relaxing holiday with lovely scenery, but it also offers golf, lots of walks, and is an area of historical interest. Portmahomack sits in a bay of the Dornoch Firth, and although it is an east coast village it faces west across the Firth and has lovely views across the water and towards the hills of Sutherland.
Our facilities
Fountain Cross Cottage is a late 19th century terraced cottage. It recently had a new kitchen and bathroom installed, and is nicely decorated with the seaside in mind. On the ground floor there is the living room, and a kitchen with dining table. Upstairs is a double bedroom and bathroom with shower and bath.
It is well heated by electric storage and panel heaters keeping the house warm all year round.
Electricity and bedding are provided.
Pets are welcome if they are well behaved and by arrangement.
Our Highland Location and Things to Do
Fountain Cross Cottage is located within the village of Portmahomack, Easter Ross, in the North of Scotland, 9 miles from Tain and 40 miles from Inverness. The cottage is in the heart of the village, close to the village hotel and pub. Although the cottage does not directly overlook the beach, the beach is literally 20 yards across the street.
Portmahomack ("The Port") has a lovely crescent shaped sandy beach in a sheltered bay, and also has a picturesque harbour, golf course, a pub (Castle Hotel), and a village shop.
There are several places to eat out - in the village itself there is the renowned Oyster Catcher restaurant, the Castle Hotel serves evening meals, and the Carnegie Hall and golf course cafe are open during the day.
The area is of archaeological interest particulalry as one the country's main Pictish sites, and The Discovery Centre in the village is excellent.
There are lots of walks in and around the village, or out to the Tarbetness lighthouse or along the coast from nearby Rockfield village.
Outwith the village, there are lots of places to visit nearby - for example Tain and Tain Museum, Glenmorangie Distillery, Dornoch, the Falls of Shin and the Harrods centre, Cromarty (by road or ferry), or Croick Church. If you want to go further afield you could go west to Lochinver, Ullapool or Strathpeffer, or north to Helmsdale, Castle of May (the Queen Mother's residence) or even a day trip to Orkney is do-able from Scrabster on the north coast.
Finally, Portmahomack enjoys high levels of sunshine and the lowest rainfall in the country. The cottage makes for a cosy retreat at any time of the year.
