Nearby Orthez, ancient capital of the Bearn and attractive market town, offers restaurants, cafes, traditional markets, internet access, and a leisure lake with attended beach, bar and waterskiing. At the village, a short walk will take you to our local bistro, (12 euros - 3 courses + wine in 2009) and take away pizzas!.
Maison Hirondelle itself sits in a spacious plot enjoying commanding views over the field and tree filled valley of the River Laa. With steeply raked, tiled roof, wooden window shutters, and partially ivy-clad facade, this is a traditional 18c Bearnaise farmhouse.
Downstairs the exposed wood ceiling beams and large, wood burning fireplace bring real French character to the open plan living accommodation. With central heating included, this country cottage, with the space of a villa - is a home for all seasons. It's also a great base for property searches in this increasingly sought after area.
As well as UK/FRENCH TV, DVD player and CD player, there is a small LIBRARY of books (English), VIDEOS and DVDs).
Upstairs, there is the bonus of a second sitting room equipped with a SECOND TV for videos and DVDs, DVD player and CD player. (Children's Videos and games supplied - as well as board games for the grown ups.)
Because we like our guests to return to us over the years, like the swallows after whom the house is named, we try to anticipate our friends needs.
Downstairs the double bedroom has its own access into the garden. It also has an en-suite shower room and the downstairs wc can be made part of this suite.
Upstairs, there is a double bedroom, a bedroom with two single beds and a cot, (baby monitor, baby bath on request) and a family bathroom. There is also a fixed baby gate. (High chair available.) (Push chair)
In the games/laundry room, you will find a freezer, also more games - a small tennis table, a hockey, pool, football table and pool floats. The property is well supplied with garden furniture, sun loungers and a BBQ for al fresco meals on the terrace. The well-stocked kitchen has a second fridge for those market bargains.
The well established garden with its nut, fruit and palm trees, slopes to the impressive, secluded and enclosed pool area, (safety gate), complete with jacuzzi and jet stream. Behind the barn, enjoy games of croquet and petanque or just sit in the evening under a star-filled sky listening to the soothing sounds of the beautiful French countryside.
