Broadford is the second largest settlement on the Isle of Skye, albeit not much more than a village, and serves as a service centre for the south of the island with a 24 hour petrol station, which houses an excellent shop. Nest to the petrol station there is a supermarket with late opening hours. There is also a tourist office in the village near the petrol station and a large carpark. There are two cash machines in the village.
At the foot of the Red Cuillin mountains and although north facing, it is essentially on the eastern side of Skye and sheltered from the Atlantic winds that tend to batter the west coast, making it a pleasant and usually sheltered location. It boasts superb views out to the north with a great panorama of mainland mountains above Applecross and the mountains above Lochcarron.
Broadford traces its history back to the late 1700s when there was a cattle market here, and over the years it has grown because of its location on the main Kyleakin to Portree road (A87), originally built by Thomas Telford. It is also a harbour village, often overlooked by visitors.
This is not only a good stopping off point on Skye, but also an ideal place to be based not only for trips around Skye, but also to venture back onto the mainland over the Skye Bridge to places like Plockton. There are plenty of attractions in Broadford including the famous Skye Serpentarium.
From Broadford there is a single track road which winds its way down 15 miles under the Red Cuillin, through Torrin, on along the foot of Blaven (a spectacular Black Cuillin outlier) and finally arrives at Elgol. Elgol boasts perhaps one of the most magnificent views in Britain looking out across Loch Scavaig to the mighty Black Cuillin which plunge 3,000 feet into the Atlantic. If you are looking for the photo of a lifetime, weather permitting, this is the place to go. It is worth considering taking enough time for a boat trip from Elgol to the foot of the mountains with Misty Isle Boat Trips (highly recommended).
