The Coast 2 Coast walk across England is one of the most popular long distance walks in the UK. It is traditionally walked from west to east, starting at St Bees, on the coast in Cumbria, and finishing at Robins Hood Bay, in North Yorkshire.
Championed by the great Alfred Wainwright, the walk is roughly 190 miles long, and usually takes between 12 and 15 days. It takes walkers through some of the most beautiful (and sometimes demanding!) landscapes of England, including the Lake District, The Yorkshire Dales, and across the North York Moors. It has everything from rolling valleys, desolate moors to rugged peaks.
The highest point on the walk is Kidsty Pike, between Patterdale and Shap in Cumbria at 2560 feet, although some walkers take an extra day in Grasmere before walking to Patterdale so they can also ascend Helvellyn.
These days there are numerous companies that will assist in your walk, primarily by carrying your luggage from one stop to another, and there is a well worn route of bed and breakfasts, and Hotels along the route to cater for all tastes and budgets. However, some like to stay true to themselves and carry their own backpacks and in fairer weather even camp overnight.
The route is outlined on the map below. Please just click any of the links to find out more information on each stop, including accommodation. Click this link to find some of the best online Coast to Coast Walk Souvenirs
