Elterwater, is small village in the heart of the Lake District in Cumbria. It grew up on the back of the nearby Skelwith Bridge slate quarry, and there was also once a flourishing gunpowder manufacturing site there, although when you drive there now you pity the poor people who had to transport the finished product away!
It is named after the small lake by which it sits, and there is a fantastic footpath from the centre of the village which follows the lake shore.
The village green itself is a picture postcard location, dominated by the 17th Century Britiannia Inn, and the local Post Office and shop. Elterwater has a range of holiday accommodation for guests, including B&Bs and cottages.
