These were the stamping grounds of Rob Roy - the famous outlaw now immortalised in a Hollywood film of the same name. He would drive his cattle along the old drove roads now called the Rob Roy Trail. You can visit the cave where he hid from his enemies next to Inversnaid. Or visit his grave in the the old cemetery at Balquhidder.
As you would expect, the area offers the full range of holiday accommodation, from five star luxury hotels, to quaint bed and breakfasts and fabulous self-catering cottages. There are also many excellent campsites and caravan parks. There is a huge range of attractions, places to eat and other activities to suit all tastes.
The main towns in the area include Stirling, Callander, Balloch, Dunblane and Bridge of Allan. In addition there are a host of small picturesque villages such as Kippen, Buchlyvie, Port of Menteith, Thornhill, Balmaha, Aberfoyle, Brig O’ Turk, Doune or further north, Strathyre, Balquhidder, Lochearnhead, Killin and Crianlarich.
The mountains and hills range from the easy and fairly small Ben A’an , Conic Hill, Ben Venue and Ben Ledi to the larger and more challenging Monroes – Ben Lomond, Ben Vorlich, Ben More and Stob Binian
The whole area is ideal for outdoor pursuits. You can climb the hills and mountains, sail on the Lochs, fish in the rivers and Lochs and cycle on the many paths and picturesque routes that criss-cross the countryside.
