Balloch is at the southern end of Loch Lomond. Many cruise operators operate from there and you can take daytime and evening cruises out over the loch. The boats include the last steamer to operate on the loch, The Maid of the Loch. The recently redeveloped shore area - called Loch Lomond Shores - offers a range of attractions including a large aquarium and several great cafes and shops including a branch of the famous Edinburgh department store, Jenners. You can also hire canoes, pedalloes and mountain bikes next to the Aquarium. A little train offers children a guided tour and there are often fairs during the summer. Balloch Castle country park offers an excellent Lochside walk, picnic areas and 200 acres of woodland, parkland and ornamental gardens. There is a visitor centre at the castle which was built in 1808.
