Cornwall is located in the very furthest south west corner of England. It is a large peninsula, so there is coast on both the north and south of the area, both of which have very different characteristics for holiday makers to take into consideration when planning a holiday there. The north coast borders the Celtic Sea, part of the Atlantic Ocean, and is more exposed so has a wilder nature. Along the south coast, known as the "riviera", it is more sheltered and there are several broad estuaries offering beautiful scenery and opportunities for some excellent canoeing, such as at Falmouth and Fowey. Beaches on the south coast usually consist of coarser sand and shingle, interspersed with rocky sections of wave-cut platform. These are very popular with surfers and body boarders.
