Hondarribia is a Spanish town just across the border from St-Jean-de-Luz, France.
The city has been inhabited since prehistoric times and the fortifications and many of the buildings, were built during the Renaissance.
The walled city contains cobbled streets of beautifully restored and preserved houses and many of the buildings have elaborate balconies and carved eaves. It has been declared a Historic Artistic Monument.
The siege of 1638 was finished on 8 September and this is celebrated in the town by a parade called the Alarde which is also a religious celebration. The Alarde includes large parades through the streets and squares of the old town, with drums banging and gunpowder being let off.
Outside the walled city, lies the district of La Marina beside the sea. Possibly the oldest part of the town, this area is the liveliest part of Hondarribia. Its streets, especially Calle San Pedro, are full of colourful painted seaside houses and are an ideal place for a walk or an aperitif.
Hondarribia's wide beach is one of the main attractions for summer visitors. Here are a wide variety of water sports: swimming, diving, windsurfing, jet-skiing etc.
