One of the ‘Plus Beaux Villages of France’, the bastide was founded in the XIV century by Louis I of Navarre, the future Louis X of France. The houses are painted white and all have shutters painted in the typically basque colours of deep red colour and green. The church is more ornate on the outside compared with most in the area. Next to the church is a Jewish cemetery.
The tourism office organises a guided discovery tour of the village, explaining its 700 year history; the street plans particular to bastide constructions, the church, the jewish cementery, and the architecture of tha basque houses. At 2009, price : 3.50euros /person, free for under 14 years

Most of the shops in the town are owned by local artisans, producing good quality goods and in September La Bastide Clairence hosts a pottery fair which brings over 50 potters from around Europe.
The little shop at the top of the town on Rue Notre Dame sells macaroons with lots of flavours including chilli pepper.
The farmer's market is every Friday evening on the village square during July and August 7pm to 10pm.
Local produce is on sale in a friendly and festive atmosphere: axoa (veal stew), charcuterie (pork delicacies), foie gras (duck liver), " confit " of a duck, pimentos, wine, cider, beer, macaroons, basque cakes, chesses....The local restaurants are open, one of which is named "Assiette du Pays" (Plate of the Region).
