Oban is often referred to as the “gateway to the Isles”. Beyond Oban lie the islands of the Inner Hebrides, the island of Lismore, Mull and the Morvern Peninsula. It is therefore the main ferry terminus for Mull and the Western Isles. Oban is the most popular holiday town on the Scottish West Coast and can get quite busy, particularly during the summer months. However, it offers many great places for eating, drinking and shopping. Its most outstanding feature is McCaigs Tower or Folly. This Coliseum lookalike stands high above the town and was built as a lasting monument to a local banker, McCaig and his family and to give employment to the local workers.
