Being situated in the heart of England Stone almost at the centre of the Trent and Mersey Canal, which is the ideal starting point for a different type of Holiday. We offer Day Hire, Shortbreaks 3 and 4 night, Weekly or multi week holidays. Canal Boating in the slow lane, an adventure, seeing England from a different view point. For those taster days you can either travel to Sandon and have a quick lunch at the Dog and Doublet (2.1/2 hrs by boat one way) or just down to Aston Marina for lunch (1 hour one way by boat from stone). For longer trips 3 & 4 night for example travel north and visit Barlaston, Wedgewood and Trentham Gardens and the Monkey park. Alternativly travel south to great Haywood and Shougborough both trips longer enough to recharge the batteries. A week or more from Stone you have several choices of routes, for an energetic week you can do the Four Counties Ring visiting Shropshire, Staffordshire, Cheshire and the Midlands. Or an easier week the Cauldon which offers lift bridges, tunnels, a river, steam engines and the churnet valley. 10 days the Cheshire Ring Manchester and the Anderton Boat lift. 2 weeks the Llangollen, Wales and the famous Aquaduct, naming but a few, each offering slightly different aspects of boating.
The Four Counties Ring is a popular route from our base . It takes approx. 8 – 9 hours a day to complete. Traveling north from our base we pass the famous Wedgewood factory, which is open to visitors, offering a chance to throw a pot. You then pass through the Potteries and the industrial part of the route and the entrance to the Beautiful Caldon Canal. We then have the Harecastle tunnel which is over 2926 yards long. Once through the tunnel you notice the locks change from single to doubles, this helped the old boaters carrying cargo to traverse the Trent and Mersey quicker. The Trent and Mersey Canal was built by James Brindley in the 1700’s and his style of build was to climb up the hills spacing the locks out. When you get on to the Shropshire union canal the surrounding country side and the land scape is much flatter, you notice there and flights of locks build much closer together. At Nantwich we have the World War 2, Secret Nuclear Bunker. Travelling south to Audlem and Market Drayton we pass through sandstone cuttings which are very narrow. When we reach Brewood we have Boscobel House where King Charles the 2nd hid in an Oak Tree after the battle of Worcester in 1951. At Autherley Junction we join the Staffs and Worcestershire Canal heading towards Coven and Penkridge. At Great Haywood Junction we have Shugborough Hall, the Lichfield Family, cousins of hm the Queen. The house and grounds are a must, they are run now by the national trust and since Lord Lichfield (the Photographer who resently passed away) the private apartments have been opened for viewing. Once at the Junction you join the Trent and Mersey again heading back home to Stone.
The Caldon is also a Popular Local canal to our base, this offers the boater an easier week about 38 hours boating. It has a Staircase lock at the entrance to the canal, lift bridges mechanical and manual, tunnels, a river, steam engines and the churnet valley. We also have a small aqueduct/viaduct which leads to the historic town of Leek near Alton Towers. Leek is full of lovely old buildings and antique shops.
