Blackness Castle was built by the Crichton family, one of Scotland’s most powerful families, in the 1400s. It was used as a stand in for Fort William in several Outlander scenes as the stronghold of Black Jack Randall. The castle itself was built, not as a castle, but as a fortress and jail for prisoners. This fact is very clear as soon as you look at the castle. It is located in the Firth of Forth, overlooking Edinburgh, making it a great place to visit while staying in the capital.
