Staithes is a peaceful fishing village, tucked away and well protected from the sea. It is a picturesque village with a small harbour draped with fishing nets. However, it has a tempestuous and fascinating past, involving great storms, tales of smugglers and pirates, of the Armada and of Captain Cook, of great fishing fleets and the enormous ironstone industry.
