Castle Leod is the ancestral home of the Earl of Cromartie, the chief of the Mackenzie. The family still live there today.
Welcome to Castle Leod
Open to the public several times a year and is described as one of the most romantic and unspoilt castles in the Highlands.
Castle Leod was built on the site of a Pictish hill fort on what was then one of the few dry places in the area. The current stone keep was probably built by the Norse invaders of the eleventh century although significant alterations have taken place in the thousand years since probably including building up of the hill mound itself and burying the original ground floor of the tower.
Castle Leod is still a family home and the seat of the Mackenzie clan. It hosts the Strathpeffer Highlands Games each year in August and other special events as well as their own open days. The castle has been in the same family for over 500 years and has been at the centre of Highland politics including involvement in the Jacobite Rising of 1745 and other events through history including death and treason.
The history is sensitively recorded throughout what is obviously a family home as well as remaining one of the country's most romantic and unspoilt castles.
