Burren National Park

Search

The Burren is the smallest National Park in Ireland at approximately 250 square kilometres. However, this does not detract from the beauty of this wonderful region. Located in Northwest County Clare, the main feature of this National Park is the Karst Landscape-an expanse of land which is almost entirely composed of exposed bedrock limestone, which has been weathered into amazing blocks and troughs, named “clints” and “grikes”. These large cracks in the rock are very deep and full of the only nutrition available on this almost desolate landscape, and therefore support an amazing variety of flowers and plants. You can find Mediterranean, Arctic and Alpine plants all in the same Grike because of this unusual environment. This variety of plants is the reason that the area is a National Park, and it makes for some very spectacular scenery. There are several limestone caves in the area, which makes an excellent trip for cavers and potholers, with the town of Doolin being the perfect base camp for people looking to take part in these activities. The limestone cliffs on the coast also make for fantastic rock climbing. Some of the West of Irelands lovely towns and villages surround the national park such as Ennis, Corofin, Burren and Crusheen.
